The UK’s Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have almost completed their shutdown of 3G services.
Systems / services that are still operating older signal transmission devices are likely to be effected as these may not be compatible with 4G or even IP/Wireless signalling.
Devices which are located in areas of poor signal for GSRM transmission will (in most cases) default to 2G or 3G by default but with the planned switch off we are finding systems which will not be capable of dual patch signalling after this point.
This change directly impacts devices that are reliant on 3G technology or have no 2G available at the installation site to fall back to.
These devices must be upgraded to 4G or 5G compatible solutions to avoid service failures and also to ensure availability of two types of signal transmission (dual path).
2G is going nowhere for now, although most if not all of the service providers have confirmed they will be switching services off by 2033. Ofcom has previously outlined its expectations for the mobile providers for both the 3G and 2G switch-offs.
